AIVF Jefferson County Salon Meeting
 
The next meeting of the AIVF Jefferson County Salon will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13th at the Irondale Public Library. The meeting room is in back of the building, a map is at www.reelscene.com/jeffcosalon.html
 
Depending on the schedule the topics will include in addition to your film project, continuing to develop our film industry here in the State and any financial impact "Big Fish" may have had. Since the last meeting we had the surprising announcement of the formation of the Birmingham Film Commission we'll examine Councilman Bert Miller's statement of 'bring to the table'.
 
The meeting is free to the public.
 
Script Development Workshop
 
The next meeting of the Script Development Workshop will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Books & Co. in Brookwood Village. Bring a script you are working on and share it with like minded peers. At the last meeting two people brought their own feature length script. The meeting generally last to 9:00 p.m. although you are free to stay and talk till store closing. For more information contact Angela at angela@boang.com .

Update from Mad Hatter Productions

The locally produced film, "Alice's Misadventures in Wonderland" is in post production and is slated to be in the 2004 Sidewalk Film Festival. For those of you who participated in the filming you can keep updated by visiting the web site www.eatmedrinkme.com . Some more promotional materials are planned to be posted within the next few months.

SOUND 101:  Location Sound Recording
Instructor:  Whit Norris
Bad sound ruins more independent movies than possibly any other factor…end of story.  Learn how to “sweeten” your filmmaking experience with an intensive hands-on workshop dealing with the theory, hardware, techniques, and aesthetics of recording sound for film and video.  Topics will include the nature of sound, human hearing, basic theory of audio, electronics, microphone selection, microphone placement, RF mics, synchronous records, SMPTE time code, mixing techniques, and on-set protocol. Demonstrated equipment will include mixers, microphones, DAT and Nagra recorders, and various pieces of support gear.
Saturday and Sunday, January 24 and 25, 2004. 10am-6pm, both days.

CINEMATOGRAPHY 101:  BASIC CINEMATOGRAPHY
Instructor:  Jim Kanter
Before you begin your own film project, learn the basic principles, technologies, and techniques of shooting film. Topics covered include film vs. video, understanding film stocks and processing, basic camera function and operation, understanding lenses, setting exposure, using filters, basics of shot composition, fundamental lighting principles, and set etiquette and procedures. While no class can turn you into an accomplished cinematographer in a weekend, it will get you started and will provide you with the basic knowledge you need to go out and start shooting film. It also serves as a foundation for the more advanced workshops dealing with more specific aspects of cinematography.  Basic Cinematography is a prerequisite for our film camera courses.
Saturday and Sunday, January 31 and February 1. 10am-6pm, both days.

Orchestras Invited to Apply for MetLife Awards for Excellence in Community Engagement
 
 Deadline: February 17, 2004
 
 The American Symphony Orchestra League (
 http://www.symphony.org/ ) has announced the 2004 MetLife
 Awards for Excellence in Community Engagement.
 
 The MetLife Awards are designed to honor outstanding work
 in the field of community engagement, highlighting
 programs that can serve as models for other orchestras.
 Orchestras of all sizes (that are members of the American
 Symphony Orchestra League) are invited to apply. Eligible
 programs are limited to the fifty states and Washington,
 D.C. Orchestras should apply on behalf of programs that
 have been in operation for no less than two years.
 
 The program will honor the work of three orchestras in the
 area of community engagement with awards of $7,500 each.

 Artists Invited to Apply for Art & Community Landscapes Program
 
  A partnership program of the National Park Service (
 http://www.nps.gov/ ), the New England Foundation for the
 Arts (NEFA) ( http://www.nefa.org/ ), and the National
 Endowment for the Arts ( http://www.nea.gov/ ), Art &
 Community Landscapes is an artist residency program
 designed to address local and regional environmental
 concerns through site-specific art projects.
 
 Selected artists develop and implement projects to inspire
 greater involvement in protecting and enhancing rivers,
 trails, and greenways in collaboration with local
 communities. Projects may include temporary art
 installations, exhibitions, interpretive media, festivals,
 or other works informed by the sites and communities of
 the project's region.
 
 The 2004-2005 project sites are Chelsea Creek Rail-Trail
 Project, East Boston, Massachusetts; and Perquimans County
 Greenways-Blueways Plan, Hertford, North Carolina.
 
 Applications are open to artists based in the United
 States (citizenship not required). Up to three finalist
 artists or artist teams per regional site will be awarded
 $1,500 in planning grant funding to develop ideas,
 conceptual plans, and create an overall proposal for one
 or more candidate projects of the region. Based on project
 proposals, one artist or artist team will be selected per
 region for the residency and project implementation. Final
 implementation grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded
 based on the project proposal's artistic merit, quality
 and feasibility.

 Disability Funders Network Invites Nominations for Impact Award
 
 Deadline: January 16, 2004
 
 A program of the Disability Funders Network (DFN) (
 http://www.disabilityfunders.org/ ), the William Diaz
 Impact Award honors grantmakers who have made a positive
 impact on the disability community and whose work
 encourages the foundation community to be more inclusive
 of disability.
 
 The award is designed to identify and recognize
 grantmakers committed to disability funding, especially
 those whose work has a significant impact on people with
 disabilities who are also members of other minority
 groups.
 
 DFN will present the award to a funder who has contributed
 significantly to programs that improve the lives of people
 with disabilities and whose work encourages the foundation
 community to be more inclusive of disability issues.
 Funding areas may include, but are not restricted to
 legislation, policy development, programs and services,
 education, and research. Award recipients will be
 presented with a monetary gift and plaque in recognition
 of their work.
 
 Staff and board members from any grantmaking institution
 may nominate grantmakers for this award. In addition, any
 member of the Disability Funders Network, except those on
 the award review committee, may nominate grantmakers for
 the award. Nominees are not required to be members of DFN.
 Self-nominations will not be accepted.
