Ezine Number 49, October 1, 2003

From The Ezine Editor

Thanks for everyone's interest in the Ezine while I make improvements, however there are a few things you can do when you send an announcement in for publication. Please read over the following list.

Send your announcement in early; something sent in 24-72 hours before your deadline may not be able to be published in time due to technical restraints or other productions I may be working on. Try to send your announcement in two weeks ahead of when you need it run.

Have your announcement include all the information in one form. Your deadline, expiration date and last day to sign up needs to be on the same sheet, not sent separately a few days later.

If you have an audition, have a contact person with a phone number, e-mail and address. Have the title of the production, have a date for the audition and/or a date for the start of production. Have a few details about the production. People want to now something before they come or call.

And remember, the information presented here is only that, information supplied to me, it is not an endorsement of any one production.

Thanks again and now on with the Ezine.

Production news

For those of you who are fans of the TV shows "Supercar" , "Fireball XL-5" and "Stingray" (not the Steven J. Cannell series starring Nick Mancuso, I mean the first series) will soon have a version of "Thunderbirds" to see in the theaters. The Gerry Anderson show will be remade at Pinewood Studios and will star Bill Paxton. Gerry Anderson used his Supermarionation process for his earlier shows and later produced the super-cool live action TV series "UFO". For more information go to

CINEMATOGRAPHY 101: BASIC CINEMATOGRAPHY...THIS WEEKEND!!
Instructor: Jim Kanter
This workshop will introduce you to the basic principles, technologies, and techniques of shooting film. Topics covered include film vs. video, understanding film stocks and processing, basic camera function and operation, understanding lenses, setting exposure, using filters, basics of shot composition, fundamental lighting principles, and set etiquette and procedures. While no class can turn you into an accomplished cinematographer in a weekend, it will get you started and provide you with the basic knowledge you need to go out and start shooting film. It also serves as a foundation for the more advanced workshops dealing with more specific aspects of cinematography. Basic Cinematography is a prerequisite for our film camera courses.
DATE CHANGE: Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5, 2003. 10am-6pm, both days. $150 members, $185 general public. Registration deadline: October 1. Limited to 12 students. *Sign up for both Cinematography 101 and Cinematography 201 (at the same time) and receive a 10% discount!

NETWORK MAGAZINE LIGHTING
Instructor: Allen Facemire
How can you get that national "network magazine" look with a talking head, a white brick wall, and the basic tricks of the trade? Allen Facemire, veteran of film and television, will show you how he gets results for clients like 20/20, DATELINE, DISCOVERY MAGAZINE, THE TODAY SHOW, and other clients who demand a superior look under all kinds of conditions…and fast. This hands-on workshop will show you how to utilize readily available tools and a small crew to achieve a national look and distinctive style. Topics include filtration that loses that ugly "video edge"; using depth of field to create a great background (from nothing); shot composition and framing; how to light someone with glasses; camera placement that works for you (not against you); dressing and prepping an interview backdrop for a unique look. Students will work with two Betacams and a Digital Video camera, along with monitors and several lighting/grip packages. Walk away knowing not only how to stage a professional broadcast "talking head" interview, but also how to execute production techniques that are timeless and applicable to both film and video.
Saturday, October 18, 2003. 10am-6pm. $95 for IMAGE members, $130 for general public. Registration deadline: October 15. Limited to 12 students. Class will be held at the PC&E Briarwood Stage, 1842 Briarwood Road, Atlanta. *Sign up for both Sound 101 and Network Magazine Lighting (at the same time) and receive a 10% discount!

BREAKING INTO FILM AS A PRODUCTION ASSISTANT
Instructor: Chris Hilsabeck
From an instructor who's braved the front lines on feature film and documentary productions, learn first-hand accounts on how to start out as a Production Assistant, or, in film lingo, a "P.A.". Beyond the regular talk of "it's all in who you know", participate in a candid discussion on the do's and dont's on getting that first film job. Other invaluable hints and resources to be covered include how to find work, how to land an interview, what (and what not) to include on your resume, and on-set expectations once you get there.
Tuesdays, October 21 and 28, 2003. 7:30pm-9:30pm. $75 members, $95 general public. Registration deadline: October 17. Limited to 12 students.
