Ezine Number 34, December 10, 2002

From the Ezine Editor

Sorry for the delay in getting the Ezine out, I've been tied up on some projects. The January 2003 meeting of the AIVF may get pushed back a couple of weeks. With the holidays and the start of school around that time trying to schedule a meeting would be too much of a conflict for everyone. We are also looking at changing the night we meet to a Wednesday or Thursday. If you have a preference let us know.

We are not planning on meeting on a Saturday or Sunday. These tend to be the days that filmmakers can work on their projects. Since making films is what we are about, whether a commercial movie shoot or a documentary or your personal film, we try to arrange our meetings to support you in your cinematic efforts.

Between now and Christmas I'll hopefully be able to finish with my next computer upgrade so there may not be an Ezine until close to New Years. Have a nice holiday everyone.

Corrections and meeting

In Ezine No. 33 there was a mistake in the December meeting of the Script Development Workshop. The meeting will actually be on Thursday December 19th and not on the 21st as originally published. The meeting will be at Books & Co. in Brookwood Village on the lower level. The meeting generally starts at 7:00 p.m. and may go to 9:00 p.m. although you are welcome to stay and talk until store closing. For more information contact Angela Burchett at angela@boang.com .

Summary of the Dec. 3 AIVF meeting

The Tuesday December 3 meeting of AIVF was on the UAB campus in Room 315 of the Hulsey Fine Arts Center, thanks to Jean Bodon for arranging the space.

We had a little bit of discussion about the overall work situation in Los Angeles. The industry is still suffering from post 9-11 slow down. There is also a good bit of production work going out of country.

We had some information about the November 9 casting call for "Big Fish". There was an expected turnout of 2,000 people and instead they got close to 8,000 responses. The casting crew was very organized and professional in handling the crowd. They were making some smaller headshots, 5x7, of people at the location. The casting may continue to Dec. 30 with filming planned to start in January 2003. Some people have been called back for further readings.

We reviewed the short film "Duality" and examined the use of storyboards in pre-production to plan the blue-screen and CGI shots. Even though this is a science fiction film there have been several movies, "Titanic" and "Windtalkers" that have relied on 3D computer models to create things that don't exist anymore. Mark Thomas and Dave Macomber did an excellent job and you can view "Duality" at their web site www.crewoftwo.com .

Production news

The UAB production "Finding Mollie" nearing the end of it's post-production work and will be finished shortly.

Other regional salon news

It arrived after the last Ezine went out but AIVF Rochester had it's December meeting on Wednesday Dec. 4th. The program reviewed the short film "The Code" by Sam Goodwin and Sean Donnelly. It was conceived, written, shot and edited in about one week as a rush entry to Project Greenlight.

A holiday film release

With the numerous Christmas specials on TV and Hanukkah films ( "8 Crazy Nights") being release, there's an overlooked film that coincides with the end of Ramadan. The movie "Muhammad, The Last Prophet" is making it's way to US theaters. Produced by Badr International, the film was researched by Islamic scholars and production facilities was RichCrest Animation, formerly Rich Animation, who made "The Swan Princess" and the Animated Bible Stories series. Considered to be one of the better portrayals of Islam since "The Message" with Anthony Quinn, the film has had a favorable response to the Middle East audiences.

To read a description of the movie you can go to http://www.arab-celebs.com/Afeeshat.asp?ID=12 or visit the film's web site at www.thelastprophet.com .
