Summary of the Tuesday, September 1 AIVF meeting

The September meeting of AIVF Birmingham was held on Tuesday, September 1 at Magic City Films.
The meeting was presided by Salon Leader Jim Brucke.

Bill Faulkner gave a presentation about his book and possible film. Thanks Bill, very informative. -ed

There was a good bit of discussion about "Big Fish". Jim Brucke was in Montgomery at the Alabama Film Office when 'another film group' posted on their web site and distributed the phone numbers for the advance production team that's here from California. Jim was told by the Film Office that those phone numbers were not authorized to be released. Not only is it premature it could jeopardize the production.

The Birmingham Salon is moving ahead with the production directory. We plan to share the submissions with the Huntsville Salon and the production directory they're putting together so North Alabama will be pretty well covered. Jim took the headshots and resumes of those that brought them to this meeting and will continue to do so for the next several meetings. If you can't come you can send your headshot and resume to

Headshots of actors need to be in a clear plastic page protector punched for a standard 3 ring binder. Your current contact information and resume need to be on the back side of the photo. If you have a talent agent representing you please include that information as well. For production or crew people submitting a resume or credits it would be a good idea to also included a photo. People coming form out of town will have a little more familiarity with the crew they may be working with.

There was some discussion about the merits of sending headshots by e-mail, mostly the standard 8x10 photo is still preferred.

For those that made and entered something into the Microshort Trailer Competition, they may be on AL.Com by Thursday, log on and vote for your favorite.

Two items about Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. Paul Godbey talked with Erik Jambor about the following.

-If you entered into The Microshort Trailer Competition, the submission form functions as a sort of a release form even though the legal language was not included on the page. If Sidewalk decides to distribute the Microshorts as a DVD or to other festivals then the ones chosen will be asked at a later date to come in sign a more complete release form.

-For those that have entered or plan to enter a script into the Short Screenplay Contest, right now the only thing offered is that your script will be made by Vazda Studio and shown at next year's Sidewalk Festival. Vazda and/or Sidewalk will have the 'rights' to the script and the winner will be consulted about any rewrites with the compensation being screen credit. Of course, maybe something else will develop as this project progresses. Erik noticed that the deadline for the Screenplay Contest fell on a Sunday so he may accept scripts on Monday, Sept. 16. (call Sidewalk for details).

Earl Hilliard, Jr. at Magic City Films had three items.

-Earl had pitched an idea for a television show to 'a major cable network' and it was successful. The pitch idea will now move toward development.

-Earl and Magic City Films will be collecting headshots of actors and resumes of production crew to have on hand for his upcoming projects ( the upcoming horror film).

-Earl plans another acting seminar for some time in November.

An undisclosed person will be doing the 30 second spot/PSA for the Jaycees Haunted House.

Chris Burns and associates are in negotiations to do the Jaycees documentary film.

Another 'attendee' informed us at the meeting about a few pending productions that might be coming to Birmingham and Alabama. Details of this information will be released at a later date.

We briefly discussed or mentioned that the 'Rick & Bubba' TV show will be made here.

We had discussions about encouraging local filmmakers here.

We also talked about an outreach to the colleges now that school is back in session; talked about finding a good meeting place; talked about the exhibition series with other AIVF salons, these topics will continue at the next meeting.
