The Filmmaking Experience "Killing Lawrence"  Part 2
-December 8, 2005
by Paul Godbey, Reelscene Ezine

HOOVER, Ala.

More with filmmaker Steve Moon as he works on "Killing Lawrence". -from Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005 in Hoover, Alabama.

By 3:00 p.m. the setup for the opposing shots has been finished. The shelves that were being used have been moved out of the room so the camera could have enough back space for the reverse point of view. During he move one of the crew members notices that Steve has been securing the camera to the tripod by using a bungee cord to hold it down. He inquires-

2ND CREW MEMBER: Do you not have a mounting screw for that?

STEVE MOON: Fell out in the music video.

Slight laughter.

STEVE MOON: I'm about to order a new one, cost eleven bucks....

2ND CREW MEMBER: Yeah, see, ah, I don't like that. I like the older ones the had it all contained in the platform head.

STEVE MOON: I thought about welding it but, Jeremy thought about it too but you can't weld cast iron, right?

2ND CREW MEMBER: Or if it's aluminum you can't, you have to do a MIG welding or something but it's just...

STEVE MOON: It'd be nice to have it already there on it so that you don't...

2ND CREW MEMBER: Yeah, that's what the old ones, all the screw and everything was just right there and you'd just..

STEVE MOON: I imagine you could put a chain on it. Put a chain on it and attach this to a chain on it so it would always stay on this [tripod].

2ND CREW MEMBER: Yeah.

There was some discussion about the lighting for this setup.

2ND CREW MEMBER: Well he's standing in front of the reflector. See...

STEVE MOON: It's defiantly dark.

2ND CREW MEMBER: Oh, I know what we can do. Do this. He opens the blinds to the window that's facing outside, a soft light fills the shadow areas. How's that.

STEVE MOON: Yeah.

1ST CREW MEMBER: Let's move at the monitor so it can be over here on set right there.

2ND CREW MEMBER: Now you can have that open [the window blinds] , and ahh, that'll give you a soft fill this way. And you've still got a little bit more on their backlight.

STEVE MOON: Ok.

2ND CREW MEMBER: Is that going to look ok?

Everyone scrutinizes the shot through the monitor. One of the actors has a serious expression on his face.

2ND CREW MEMBER: (paraphrases a line from the scene) ' OH yeah! He blew UP! A RPG went through his stomach! Steve and the others laugh. Like this (imitates an explosion sound) .

There was some more adjustments to the monitor and the microphone. Cast and crew took a short break. By 3:08 p.m. they were back in the room again, Steve was directing one of the actors as to how he wanted him to pick up some shirts on the floor.

STEVE MOON: Alright, so you walk in. Just kind of pace around so that I can get your feet. And you're going to grab those and you're going throw them in. And then you're going to walk around and get the orange ones. And toss it over there. And that's it. And we'll be done with that shot. Let's do it one more time.

There's some talking in the background.

2ND CREW MEMBER: Quite on the set.

STEVE MOON: Now walk over to those other two and you notice those are your shirts. Now walk over towards me, look over there to those shirts again, they're both yours, now you're walking over this way. That's when Lawrence (character name) is fixing to walk in... and then boom, done. Alright lets get Lawrence or Nolan to come in.

PATRICK: What. You said Nolan. Want me?

STEVE MOON: Oh I'm sorry. You don't need those, you're just using that to give me something to cut to. Alright, DJ (character name) come over here. And stand right.... (Steve positions Joey by the door)  The office is going to show up is the only thing.

FRANKIE: Ain't that a hallway?

There was some discussion about the room seen through the doorway will also be an office for another scene. Since the actors have to come through the door the room for he office would be seen. It was decided to have the room's door cracked open obscuring the room behind and the actors could sort of side step around it to enter onto the room. Steve positions the actors.

STEVE MOON: Leave it just like that. Nolan (character name) go lean on that door, lean back on it. Alright, Joey you come there.

PATRICK: How's that?

STEVE MOON: Na, you're going to lean on the door itself. Come on in, close the door, and lean right there.

2ND CREW MEMBER: You can close it a little more.

STEVE MOON: Alright Joey you're there. Nolan (character name) stand on the other side of the door. The outside of it. Right here. Hold up.

Patrick stands in the room facing the camera.

2ND CREW MEMBER: You want to put his left shoulder against the edge of the door.

STEVE MOON: Alright. This where  we took it at the very top when he was messing with the black bag that was over here, and you just threw something in it... you're going to look this way, going to look down, and you're going to walk in. Let's walk it one time. Walk in, there you are and give your line.

Patrick and Joey rehearse their walk-in saying about one line each.

STEVE MOON: Ok, let's start from the top, we'll roll this time.

And.. action.

Patrick and Joey start and cover several pages of dialog.

STEVE MOON: Hold this thought. Hey Frankie!

FRANKIE: Yes.

STEVE MOON: You're getting ready to come in.

2ND CREW MEMBER: And close the door to the gym if it's not already closed.

FRANKIE: Hey hold on a minute.. (Frankie is on a cell phone)

STEVE MOON: Alright, while he's talking I'm just gonna make some reaction shots here. Ok, roll your eyes like you don't understand what's wrong with your brother Joey.

FRANKIE: Ok, whenever you want to.

STEVE MOON: Alright just, ahh, come in when point to ya. Start with ahmm, ' his mind is not his own ', whatever the line was... alright. Just listen up for your cue.

Alright action.

The actors go thru the scene until..

STEVE MOON: OK, look at the clothes while he's talking, just look around like you're thinking about packing his stuff up some more. Keep going, Nolan (character name)

Kick the bag again while you're talking.

The actors continue with the scene until a pause. Frankie Carra comes into the shot at a certain point.

PATRICK: Do you want me to do it again?

STEVE MOON: Yeah, but I liked a lot of that, that you were actually watching ....

Camera still rolling and start just speaking, Nolan (character name).

Patrick starts his line, Frankie comes in to start his lines. The actors continue with the scene for several minutes.

Outside, right by the entrance door to the gym, the gym owners start spray painting the shelves that were being used earlier. A strong smell comes into the room while filming. Some humorous comments are made and everyone laughs. The scene ends and the equipment is broken down to move to the next setup. It is about 3:30 p.m.
