Highlights of the October 13, AIVF Jefferson County Salon meeting
Discussion about  the proposed Jefferson County Regional Film Office. Setting it up as a 501-C-3 organization hasn't proven itself as a model anywhere else in the country so not too sure if it would work here. Also a lot of questions about the $60,000 given by the County Commission to a 'task force'. Was this to set up a Film Commission or a study or what? A Birmingham News article of April 9, 2004 has a 'filmmaker' asking the County Commission for $60,000 but in a Birmingham Post-Herald article of July 29, 2004 the same 'filmmaker' after receiving the money is reported to be unsure of what to do next. Reference was made as to the information in the article at http://reelscene.com/news/rsricker040921.html .
Discussion about "Heaven's Fall"  The production is winding down and the crew had an adventure during Hurricane Ivan. They stayed and helped out the community. The crew used their cheery pickers to secure plywood over the windows of the historic Monroeville County Courthouse which protected the building from serious damage. They also, during the height of Hurricane Ivan, loaned the  use of their generators to help power the 911 call center when the electricity went out. One topic that came up was a lack of trained film personnel residing in the state.
The short film "Invisible Friend" is now out on DVD.
A feature length film has been delayed due to Hurricane Ivan blowing away an intended set in Florida.
Films watched were,
a trailer for "Team America" which opens tomorrow (Oct. 15),
a political satire, "This Land" by Greg and Evan Spiridellis,
a new trailer for "The Incredibles" set to open in November,
a trailer for "Robots" set to open in March 2005,
and for Halloween a reshowing of Jennifer Shiman's films,
"Jaws in 30 seconds and re-enacted by bunnies"
"Alien in 30 seconds and re-enacted by bunnies"
"The Exorcist in 30 seconds and re-enacted by bunnies"
"The Shining in 30 seconds and re-enacted by bunnies"
and a trailer for a series of horror parodies "...in 30 seconds and re-enacted by bunnies" to be shown on Starz Halloween night.

The meeting started a little early. We also enjoyed the 'rock and roll' motif decorating the meeting room.

Storyboards of a current project were viewed. Some discussion of e-mail technical issues which delayed mailing the ezine.

Some discussion about getting into the film business, how some people got started.

Some discussion about making a commercial. Some discussion about making a sit-com. Some discussion about the public access on Birmingham Cable (now Brighthouse).
Some discussion about the film incentive legislation bills, one was for the establishment of an economic zone for movie production.
There was some discussion about the Birmingham Film Commission or rather it's demise. It's just as well, a published article has one of the potential film commission member and the newspaper publisher making personal attacks against a private citizen who was also being selected to serve on the film commission. Click here to read the article  This unprovoked attack of viciousness made by these individuals is not seen as a good way to show unity and cooperation of the commission members and to attract business to come here. The regional film office plan http://reelscene.com/bjrfo/bjrfoindex.html  discussed at an earlier Salon meeting would be a better choice and avoid this type of problem.
