| For a core
group of members the Salon started a long time ago with an interest
in filmmaking in Alabama. Some of the individuals over the years
have participated in The Alabama Filmmakers Co-op when it had
a branch in Birmingham and in Southside Sundown Cinema
along with being involved with local television production an
theatrical events and contributing to the film industry for the last
25 years. Thus all the elements were in place for a strong indie
film scene when AIVF Salon founders, including Michelle Forman,
(former head of development for Spike Lee) got together to organized
their first meeting. It was an instant success with over 120
participants engaged in lively discussions and forging partnerships.
Since it's founding, the
Birmingham Salon has expanded to encompass all of the county and
became The Jefferson County Salon. Drawing
on this experience and talent, Salon participants can be informed
about subjects ranging from the merits of orthochromatic silver
nitrate film to resolving NLE software conflicts. Whether the
project is a short personal film, a student film, an indie movie
or a big studio movie, Jefferson County has been supportive of all
and has seen a few notable film endeavors emerge from it's
meetings. As part of it's educational and media advocacy role,
Jefferson County will be continuing to strengthen it's association
with local education institutions, AIVF salons. other film groups,
local art groups and foundations, state business leaders, the
Birmingham City Council and the Alabama Film Office. All are
invited to attend no matter what level of experience, to learn,
participate and contribute to the film community. There is a free
subscription to an electronic magazine, an ezine, of local
filmmaking information and a web site with AIVF Jefferson County
information at www.reelscene.com
